Synopsis
Civics as school subject has been mandatory since 1959 in Singapore, albeit having seen various reiterations and repackages.
As an early Millenial going to school in the 90s thru the early 2000s, I sat through the CME and NE bundles. I must reflect on national identity and civic consciousness. I must have strong moral character, and social-emotional skills.I must contribute to society and nation. I sat, therefore I am.
About Chen Jiexiao
Besides being Artistic Director of Singapore-based collective Miao Dance, Chen Jiexiao is also the Director of production house Rice Bowl Pixels, as well as a swimming instructor. His dance films have been selected for more than 100 festivals internationally, winning awards such as Grand Jury Award, Best Direction, Best Video Art, Best Concept and Best Sound Design. Jiexiao is primarily concerned with topics relating to the human condition, particularly notions of loneliness and capriciousness. He is also interested in the grey area where habits are formed after repetition, navigating between cognizance and defiance.
