Synopsis
Architecture as an art for the public: as a catalyst object, a still performance, an intervention and a vessel for rituals, performatives, and practices.
About Akai Chew
With architecture as a stepping off point, Akai Chew works in photography, maps, and installation art, engaging in a site-specific, observation and research-based methodology. Connecting such diverse projects are the common threads of urban memories, stratum of histories, and contested geographies. By revealing the hidden multiplicity of place and the veneer of identity, the artist nudges us towards unexpected encounters with history. He studied architecture at the University of Tasmania, had exhibited in Perth, New Delhi, Bandung, Hobart and Launceston. Highlights include showing work at Dark MOFO 2018 in Hobart, and Light to Night 2022 and Archifest 2023 commissions.
